Green Team - Caring for the Earth

The Green Team at Highlands UMC Denver exists to inform, equip, and inspire our congregation and our community to care for the earth as God's creation.

We are currently working on gathering information and taking action in the following areas:
  • Recycling tips, including recycling electronics
  • Gardening and composting (Did you know we have a church vegetable garden? Contact Pastor Kerry if you would like to help out!)
  • Using real dishes instead of paper or styrofoam for fellowship hour, and running the dishwasher instead of washing by hand
  • A special worship season celebrating the earth as God's creation and how we care for it
  • Ways to be green online
  • Solar panels installed through a Power Purchase Agreement so that our electricity comes from a renewable source
See links on the left side of the screen for more information. Or, if you would like to join the Green Team, let Pastor Kerry know via the church office!

Winter/Spring 2012 Theme: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Past Themes & Activities

Fall 2011 Theme: Reducing Waste

Summer 2011 Theme: Water

  • Staff members of El Porvenir, a non-profit tenant of HUMC, spoke during worship on August 21 about their work in water development and sanitation in rural communities in Nicaragua.

  • Green Team members bagged and delivered mulch to spread on the church gardens. Mulch has many benefits, including preventing evaporation of moisture from the soil during summer's hottest days.
  • Check out these tips from Denver Water on how to conserve water each month.
Season of Creation
In September, Pastor Betty and Pastor Kerry worked with members of the Green Team to plan a four-week celebration of the Season of Creation.  This is a relatively new season in the liturgical year, and highlights our congregation’s focus on caring for the earth from both a theological and a practical perspective. Our themes included:
In Scripture, song, prayer, and practice, we seek to honor God the Creator by caring for all of God’s creation.
